Extraordinary Breath is an exciting, easy-to-learn proactive system of self-care developed by Donald Rubbo. The Extraordinary Breath system is a gentle, yet profound process that integrates Eastern spiritual and healing practices and transformative philosophies with a modern approach.
"An extraordinary breath is when our intention and our breath are one; with every long, deep and even breath we consciously balance mind, body and spirit," says Elizabeth Meloney, Program Director at Paul D. Pickens II Research Foundation, the parent organization of Rubbo Art of Energy. "Anyone can benefit from this deep breathing practice, anywhere and anytime. The results are immediate, and profoundly calming."
The Extraordinary Breath is a system of diaphragmatic breathing techniques, a gentle method specifically designed by Donald Rubbo to retrain body, mind and spirit for mindful living, living in the present moment centered in your body with joy, clarity and generosity.
This breathwork is a profound method of purification, facilitating internal and external cleansing. External purification is achieved through forms work (the actual physical movements of stance work); walking; hiking; and other mundane activities, in order to sweat out the toxins that are lodged in the body and bring the body into a state of relaxation. Internal purification is achieved through breathwork and intention, releasing carbon dioxide and bringing stability to the mind and emotions.
Once the body is purified, the mind becomes clear and the emotions become radiant.
The Work is based on the following principles:
- Virtue, Integrity
- Self-purification, the desire to look within and do the work
- Postures, Stances, Formswork
- Breath control, mindfulness and control of the breath
- Sense control, mindfulness and control of the sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin)
- Concentration
- Meditation, or Contemplation
The benefits of deep breathing have been known since the beginning of human existence, in countless cultures and in profound spiritual practices. People have developed and practiced deep breathing systems for centuries to reach levels of ecstasy, to connect with the divine, to understand the deeper mysteries of life and to increase health and prolong life.
Recent scientific research shows that deep breathing exercises will:
- improve health
- reduce the symptoms of stress
- reduce the symptoms of asthma, respiratory disease, heart disease, anxiety, panic attacks and depression;
- accelerate recovery from surgery
- control pain (including childbirth)
Deep breathing exercises also:
- boost performance in sports for athletes
- give boxers, dancers, golfers and runners greater stamina
- deepen yoga practice and meditation
- enhance abilities for voice and music students
- reduce test anxiety for students and increase attention span, sharpen focus and improve memory.
Donald and Cheryl Lynne chose the phrase Extraordinary Breath to invoke the thought of taking a long, deep, health-enhancing breath.
